Vital Signs and Measures

All measures, including the measures within the Vital Signs, are equally weighted.

Tunisia presents many strengths in healthcare sustainability.

Similar to its north African counterparts, Tunisia’s population is among the healthiest on the continent. The country faces low death rates from suicide, cancer, and from communicable disease – achievements which are reflected by Tunisia having the longest life expectancy in the region and the fewest DALYs of all causes. However, Tunisia is bottom of rankings for alcohol and tobacco consumption, indicating two latent issues which may affect health outcomes in future years. With respect to external factors impacting health, Tunisia scores well for widespread access to utilities such as clean drinking water, electricity, and internet. Furthermore, its overall performance in the Index is boosted by its excellent results in social determinants of health, such as its low incidence of human trafficking, existence of slums, and extent of poverty.  However, looking more closely at improving the management of health delivery would go a long way in ensuring healthcare sustainability. Similarly, lagging behind on the innovation front, the country could now plan to leverage its forward-looking initiatives - such as its intellectual property incentives and collaborative efforts across healthcare information systems and academics - to catch-up on Middle Eastern countries and become an innovation champion in the region.
