Vital Signs and Measures

All measures, including the measures within the Vital Signs, are equally weighted.

Ethiopia has many of the essential components of a sustainable healthcare system.

Like Tanzania, the advancement, access and application of novel health technology is one of Ethiopia’s strengths. Ethiopia leads the continent in its ehealth capacity and its use of electronic health records, potentially thanks to its number of health information system foundations. There is a clear need to work on determinants of health like clean drinking water, electricity, and education as poor performance in these have a negative impact on maternal and child health.  Low alcohol and tobacco consumption and low obesity rates translate into comparatively low death rates from cancer and cardiovascular disease, although challenges remain in tackling communicable diseases – viral hepatitis in particular. As for other countries, there are significant staffing issues in Ethiopia which hinder access to health services, which is exacerbated by shortages of medicines defined as essential by the World Health Organization.
