Vital Signs and Measures

All measures, including the measures within the Vital Signs, are equally weighted.

The healthcare system in Angola faces a number of challenges on its path to sustainability.

Compared to other countries, Angola performs well in responding to emerging health threats, leading the continent alongside Nigeria in its COVID-19 response stringency and also in testing cases of tuberculosis for multiple drug resistance. Challenges remain in providing uninterrupted on-the-ground services, most notably around providing family planning services, vaccination, public health programs for infectious diseases like treatment for tuberculosis, and improving accessibility of anti-retroviral therapy. However, Angola does do comparatively well in health infrastructure-dependent areas, such as access to specialists (as shown by availability of radiotherapy and cervical cancer screening) and medicines. Angola’s health system would be vastly improved by increasing staffing levels, developing policies favouring adoption of health insurance (reducing dependence on private providers), and improving internet access. Looking at specific diseases, the health status of the Angolan population could be improved by a greater prioritisation of measures to tackle communicable diseases such as diarrhoeal disease, water-borne illness and malaria.
