Vital Signs and Measures

All measures, including the measures within the Vital Signs, are equally weighted.

Cameroon has many of the essential components of a sustainable healthcare system.

Despite Cameroon’s historical issues with its healthcare ecosystem, especially with regard to availability of personnel, there is a fairly good level of healthcare coverage, most notably in the fields of family planning, HIV testing, anti-retroviral therapy, antenatal care and availability of ICU beds and medicines. Access to healthcare and service delivery could be improved by addressing the comparatively low numbers of anaesthesiologists, pharmaceutical and dentistry personnel and improving public health care programmes on infectious diseases. Cameroon ranks among the highest in the Index in rates of suicides, a situation which may benefit from increasing the numbers of mental health workers.  Additionally, health system financing could be boosted by increased macroeconomic policy in this area, as governmental health expenditure is currently low. Innovation is incentivised by a comparatively lucrative patent landscape for pharmaceuticals, which could be further bolstered by increased protection of intellectual property and more collaboration in the life sciences and exploring opportunities to use and institutionalise ehealth.
